Workshop Theme:
Anthropologists and Anthropology in Japan:
Looking into the future of ethnography and fieldwork (in the age of changing media)

Anthropology increasingly concerns itself with how our work and fieldwork is - or should be - changing and redefining/adapting itself, including adjusting to new media forms and new information sources that are constantly spreading. For the last century plus, anthropologists have adapted different technologies and strategies to field work. This process continues with new techniques and ways of thinking being added to, or replacing, techniques and ways of thinking of the past. The laptop computer greatly enhances some aspects of note taking and certainly communication but often is used in addition to old-fashioned field notebooks.
How do anthropologists in Japan find their places and answers in the world of the future? How is digital photography and video including YouTube making ethnography change and what will be the changes/adaptations of the future?
Are there “penalties” to technological change? Does enhanced speed of communication and compilation of fieldwork sometimes meanthat the overall quality of fieldwork deteriorates?
